Meet Cari Kid!

Hi Kids! I am Cari Kid your friend from Caribe Federal Credit Union, as you can see I am a Puerto Rican Parrot. I am part of the family of birds called parrots. The Taino Indians used to call us Higuacas, because of the noises we do when flying. We are the only native parrots in Puerto Rico and figure among the ten rarest bird species in the world.

As you can see, my feathers are sparkling green and in my forehead, I have a red band and a white arc around my eyes. The primary feathers on my wings are blue and only visible when I fly. All the parrots of my kind have the same features. We are a very united family. We live with our mommy, daddy and siblings in a deep tree cavity until we are ready to fly. Afterwards, we stay close to the flock and a specific area in the rain forest.

My family, the Higuacas, needs large forest areas in order to find good tree cavities for nests and plenty of seeds for food. When coastal forests were destroyed, our populations were greatly reduced. At present, to help us reproduce, humans and biologists are establishing conservation programs and even building artificial nests in El Yunque. They also keep some of us in the aviary, where we are safe to reproduce and then, when we are ready, release us into the wild. Parrots in the aviary are protected to save our endangered species if a hurricane comes to the island.

For the Higuacas the artificial homes that have been created are the resource that secures us if an emergency happens. For humans, the money they have saved is the resource that secures them if any emergency happens. Join me while I share the story of how I learned the importance of saving our resources. I will give you tips on how you can have fun while earning your own money. After that, we can play together in the fun stuff section. Welcome to Cari Kids!
